Georgia lawmakers might reconsider USG cuts

Two leading republicans in the Georgia General Assembly say they are open to reconsidering cuts to the University System of Georgia that legislators made during the recent legislative session.

The AJC reports House Appropriations Committee Chairman Matt Hatchett said he is definitely open to restoring funding. And Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Blake Tilley also indicated he would be open to considering it during next year’s legislation session when amendments to the current budget can be made.

Lawmakers unexpectedly cut $66 million from the system’s teaching budget.

Regents delayed setting next year’s tuition rates for its 26 colleges and universities while they decide how to absorb to loss.
