Two Clarke County detention officers were recently assaulted by an inmate.
According to release from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, between approximately 7:50 and 8:15 pm on the evening of April 21st, a female sergeant was checking a unit in the jail when she was attacked by a male inmate who created a weapon by molding several bars of soap together and stuffing them inside a sock. The male struck the sergeant in the head several times and tried to remove her Taser. A male Dentition officer was struck as he tried to assist her. His Taser was knocked out of his hand the inmate tried to taser him. Additional officers arrived and were able to restrain inmate and place him in a restraint chair. Both officers were treated at a local hospital and later released. The Detention Officer assigned to that unit was busy dealing with an incident that had just occurred. The male was in custody on third degree arson charges.
There is no timeline on when the officers will return to duty. The incident is under investigation.
