Plane crash in Oconee County leaves two dead

Two people are dead after a plane crash near Watkinsville around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. The Cessna 177B was flying from Central Florida and believed to be headed to Winder, according to reports.

The crash happened off Government Station Road near Experiment Station Road on property owned by the University of Georgia. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have found debris in the area of Stonebridge Parkway and Latham Drive which appears to have come from a plane, to contact authorities immediately.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials are expected to provide more details in a preliminary accident report later today.
