During a nearly five-hour long meeting, Athens-Clarke County Commissioners heard from community members of several topics, one item on the agenda, relocation a fraternity to the Red & Black building. A move many Henderson Avenue residents say would cause significant disruption to an historic neighborhood.
Concerns about parking, trash, and noise dominated residents’ comments, and some commissioners shared those worries. The fraternity is currently located on West Broad, also in close proximity to a residential area.
But there were supporters in attendance who felt the fraternity should be given a chance.
The county’s planning commission previously recommended denying approval in a 4-3 vote on May 4. A final commission vote is scheduled for June 6.
