Black Veterans Lynching Remembrance Memorial

The National WWII Museum

The 2023 Memorial Day weekend is nearly upon us, offering the chance to honor the United States veterans who died in our nation’s wars, including those who lost their lives in homegrown war against Black Americans.

Coordinator of Athens Area Court Watch project, John Cole Vodicka, has organized a 5th annual vigil commemorating the Black World War II soldiers who returned home from service not to finally be met with human dignity, but to be targeted and lynched by their own countrymen.

He says the lives of these veterans will be remembered at this weekend’s ceremony, which will take place at Veterans Memorial Plaza in Athens this Friday, May 26 from noon to 1pm.
