Gun safety Advocates in Athens are joining those around the state and nation this weekend, taking part in the annual “Wear Orange” event. Supporters say the gatherings raise awareness about the problem of gun violence. Emma Jones is with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The organization says more than 120 people are killed by gun violence every day in America, with about 60 percent of number due to suicide.
Jones says the family-friendly gathering will not be a somber occasion and will feature games and activities for children. It takes place Sunday, at noon at the Bishop Park pavilion in Athens.
Additional organizers include Mentoring Young Men, Project Safe, and Sheats Social Services. Volunteers will honor those affected by gun violence.
