After months of discussion and debate, a proposal to recognize and collectively bargain with a local firefighters’ union overwhelmingly passed the Athens-Clarke County Commission on Tuesday night.
Only one commissioner, District 4’s Allison Wright, opposed the measure, saying that it could cause divisiveness among county workers and resentment from employees who are not allowed to join a union.
Georgia law makes a specific exception to allow firefighters unions to bargain collectively. The City of Atlanta recognized its local firefighters’ union in October 2021.
