The district attorney for Clarke and Oconee Counties is firing back at critics who say her office was unresponsive to open records requests.
In a statement released late Thursday afternoon, the office of DA Deborah Gonzalez said that the district attorney, “continues to stand strong in the face of harassment and false statements directed at her office.”
Gonzalez and her office are embroiled in a lawsuit with business owner Jarrod Miller, who accuses the DA of neglecting her duty by issuing a statement vowing not to prosecute certain low-level drug offenses and truancy. That case is pending before the Georgia Supreme Court.
In recent weeks, Miller’s attorneys filed a second lawsuit against Gonzalez, accusing her of not responding to open records requests and of instructing a subordinate to delete text messages that could have been subject to an open records request.
Gonzalez’s statement does not address those allegations specifically, but it does note that 84% of the office’s open records requests this year have come from Miller’s attorney.
According to the statement, all those requests were responded to within three days, as required by law.
