ACC Courthouse's new location could remain close to downtown

The Athens-Clarke County courthouse will be moving in the coming year,s but possibly not too far away.

While its current building will be renovated into a multi-use governmental facility, a new site will hold the primary courthouse with the use of SPLOST 2020 funds. The commission discussed a list of five potential sites at their July 18 meeting.

Results from a public survey revealed that the East Hancock Avenue location, which is closest to the existing building, was the most popular. Some commissioners emphasized the importance of keeping the courthouse downtown, including Jesse Houle from District 6.

“Talking with many people who work in the courthouse day in, day out, and any side of the courtroom, it’s been clear the consensus I’ve heard from everyone, downtown is the best place for this to be for a variety of reasons,” Houle said.

The commission is scheduled to vote on approving the sites for more in-depth review on August 1.
