A giant red bass, a mural inspired by MC Escher, and an homage to great Georgia musicians - Athens-Clarke County commissioners got a look Tuesday night at three public art projects that will be built into the Classic Center Arena.

The overall budget for public art for the arena is $320,000 – one percent of the project’s overall cost. Three artists were selected to contribute after a nationwide search. The artwork selected includes an outdoor sculpture of an upright bass by Christopher Weed, an image entitled “Architecture of Imagination” by Kate Lewis, and an indoor mural by Stephen Teller entitled “A Blossoming Ode to Georgia Music.”

The Mayor and Commission will vote on the selections next month, and if approved, the art is expected to be installed next summer.
