Georgia Labor Commissioner on $105 Million of 'Hidden Funds' Under Predecessor

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson held a press conference Thursday morning at the state Department of Labor to reveal the findings of an audit and investigation which uncovered over $105 million dollars in unremitted funds.

According to Thompson that money began accumulating in fiscal year 2014, during the tenure of former Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The investigation is ongoing, though Thompson said several department files and records are missing or unavailable.

Thompson said an earlier report by the attorney general’s office showed 280 full time state employees, who were never unemployed, received nearly 6.7 million in unemployment benefits in 2020 and 2021. Earlier this week, eight people were indicted for receiving fraudulent benefits.
Commissioner Thompson has turned over the $105 million to the Georgia State Treasury.
