Thursday Georgia Governor Brian Kemp strongly rejected the idea of calling a special legislative session to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The calls come from those opposing her efforts to indict former President Donald Trump and his allies.
“Up to this point, I have not seen any evidence that DA Wllis’ actions, or lack thereof warrant oversight be the Prosecuting Attorney Oversight Commission,” according to Kemp. “Regardless in my mind, a Special Session of the General Assembly to end run around this law is not feasible and may ultimately prove to be unconstitutional.”
The remarks, which came during a press conference for an update on storm damage caused by Idalia, seek to address Republican state Senator Colton Moore’s effort to impeach Willis in the General Assembly.
“The bottom line is that in the state of Georgia as long as I’m governor, we’re going to follow the law and the Constitution, regardless of who it helps and harms politically,” Kemp said. “Over the last few years, some inside and outside of this building may have forgotten that. But I can assure you that I have not.”
Kemp also voiced opposition to efforts to defund Willis’ office.
“In Georgia, we will not be engaging in political theater that only inflames the emotions of the moment. We will do what is right. We will uphold our oath to public service. And it is my belief that our state will be better off for it.”
