Athens-Clarke County commissioners voted to keep existing fees for downtown parklets until the end of the fiscal year while making some changes to the program.
While the new ordinance does detail what types of barriers and decks will be allowed for parklets, another proposed change - parklet fees - will remain at $500 for two spaces until Jun. 30, 2024 to allow downtown business owners to prepare for future fee increases.
Parklets came to Athens in the summer of 2020 to add more outdoor dining options amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With the parklet program, downtown businesses can pay a fee to use street parking spaces in front of their business as an outdoor seating area.
