Food Bank on Potential Impact of Government Shutdown on Athens

Congress is sharply divided over paths to divert a shutdown of the federal government. A shutdown would result in furloughs for millions federal employees, leave the military without pay, disrupt air travel, and cut off vital safety net services.

Kelly Klein is Director of Development the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. She says the impact of a shutdown would certainly be felt in Athens.

The Food Bank serves residents in a 14-county area.

Tuesday, the Senate pushed a bipartisan temporary measure to keep the government operating, the continuing resolution, or CR would keep the government running through November 17th. The measure faces long odds in the House.

The House wants federal spending by 8%, toughen border security, and slash aid to Ukraine. A senate measure calls for adding $6 billion to Ukraine and $6 billion for U.S. disaster relief.
