UGA women’s soccer advances to NCAA second round

UGA Today

The University of Georgia women’s soccer team beat Liberty University in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Friday.

With a score of 2-1, they will advance to the second round next weekend, facing the University of Iowa in Clemson, South Carolina

Graduate forward Hannah White and freshman defender Kiera Staude both scored goals with the help of graduate midfielder Croix Bethune. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Brown saved three times in the 90 minute game.

Staude’s shot at the 85th minute was her first career goal. “I’m just thankful for any minutes I get on the field just cause I’m a freshman, I’m so young. So I’m just thankful to be a part of this team and contribute what I can."

Coach Keidane McAlpine became the head coach in 2021. He has coached teams that have made appearances in the NCAA tournament for 11 consecutive seasons.

White previously thought this would be a year for rebuilding, but their success has proven otherwise “In the middle of the season when there kind of was a drought and we weren’t doing as well, I think people started to doubt but I think as a team we came together and we had full belief in each other and when the time came we executed and obviously we did really well,”

The team will play Iowa on November 17 at 2 p. m.
