Georgia Legislators Propose Congressional Map Overhaul Amid Voting Rights Act Concerns

After passing new maps for state house and senate districts Friday, Georgia legislators have begun considering a new congressional map that creates an additional Black majority district. The map released by the Georgia senate’s republican majority is designed to meet the requirements of a finding by a federal judge that the state’s maps violate the Voting Rights Act.

The new congressional map makes huge changes to the 6th district which is currently represented by a Republican. It would also make dramatic changes to the 7th district, currently represented by a Democrat but seemingly making more viable for a Republican to win. Democrats claim the new map continues to subvert voters.
