ACCPD Seized Drug Haul of 7,000 Potentially Fatal Doses of Fentanyl, Meth, and Cocaine

ACCPD Press Release

Athens Police have charged a man with trafficking three major street drugs. 40-year-old Dwan Maurice Hewlett of Sawdust Drive in Hull is charged with trafficking in three major street drugs, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Hewlett, is also charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm with an altered serial number, and obstruction.

The Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force reported that Hewlett had 139 grams of fentanyl, which amounts to nearly 7,000 potentially fatal doses. Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said upwards of 70% of drug overdose deaths are related to this synthetic opioid, described as 100 times more powerful than morphine.

Wilson said there have been 49 overdose deaths this year and so far 32 were related to fentanyl. Athens-Clarke police have asked anyone with knowledge of people dealing with drugs to call the drug tip line at (706) 613-3297.
