Athens-Clarke County and UGA Conduct Annual Tornado Warning Siren Tests

ACC Government

In preparation for potential severe weather emergencies, Athens-Clarke County and the University of Georgia will be conducting their annual tests of outdoor tornado warning sirens and emergency alert systems on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at 9:00 AM. The tests are part of the statewide Severe Weather Preparedness Week from February 5-9, 2024.

In case of inclement weather, the test will be postponed until Friday, February 9, at 9:00 AM. Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Nate Moss emphasizes the importance of community preparedness, urging residents to plan for hazards like ice storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding.

Residents can sign up for emergency alerts through the Unified Government’s website and UGA Alert. The 12 tornado warning outdoor sirens are strategically located, and the drill is part of Georgia's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The community is encouraged to participate and review safety procedures.
