The University of Georgia marked its fifth consecutive year of growth in research and development expenditures last year, reaching a record high of $570.9 million. The 4.6% increase between the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years followed UGA’s biggest leap in recent history — $51.7 million — between fiscal years 2021 and 2022.
Key drivers of the 4-year growth include strategic investments in research infrastructure and faculty recruitment, such as the completion of the Interdisciplinary STEM Research Complex in 2022 and the new Poultry Science Building, which opened last fall.
UGA plans to continue its efforts in expanding its research infrastructure with ongoing and future renovations to buildings on Science and Ag Hill, which includes 186,000 square feet of laboratory space on the university’s South Campus.
UGA’s 2023 research expenditures will be used to determine the university’s 2024 ranking in the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development survey. UGA’s 2022 R&D expenditures of $545.6 million ranked it 56th among 899 U.S. universities, up one spot from FY21, in the rankings in November 2023.
