Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is set to sign the state’s midyear budget into law this afternoon at the state capitol. The budget comes in at a hefty $37-plus billion dollars, about $5.5 billion more than lawmakers originally budgeted last year. The increased spending is buoyed in part by the state’s economic health, leaving budget writers with a surplus of funds.
Among many other things, the 2024 midyear budget provides for $1,000 bonuses, already received, for state employees, as well as $50 million for a new medical school at the University of Georgia.
Kemp will be joined by House Speaker Jon Burns and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones when he signs the midyear budget into law this afternoon.
