Athens’ unemployment rate fell last month after slightly rising in January. Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Athens recorded an unemployment rate of 2.9% in February, down from 3.1% last month.

The city saw an increase in both the labor force and employed residents. The labor force saw a 938 person increase. Athens finished the month with 101,253 employed residents, which is over 4,000 more residents when compared to February 2023 and over 700 more residents than last month.

“Georgia continues to thrive, fueled by a powerhouse workforce and savvy economic investments,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “For the past 48 months and counting, Georgia has continued to outshine the nation with low unemployment and high-quality jobs. Our regional unemployment numbers are a testament to this remarkable track record of success and Georgia’s ability to drive economic opportunity across virtually every corner of the state.”  [February]

In comparison to last February, the unemployment rate is down three-tenths of a point, and unemployment claims have fallen by 11%.
