Third Suspect Arrested in Connection with Shooting Death of 3-year-old


A third suspect is in custody for the shooting death of a three-year-old child in Athens.

Athens-Clarke County Police say Desmontrez Mathis was arrested in Augusta Thursday in connection with the March 8th fatal shooting of a three-year old in Athens. Mathis was charged with two counts of Murder Malice and Felony Murder), four counts of Aggravated Assault, and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism Act.

Mathis is currently in the Clarke County Jail He was arrested in an operation with law enforcement from the ACCPD’s Criminal Investigation Unit, Middel Georgia FBI Safe Streets Task Force, the CSRA FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

A fourth suspect, Dakious Echols, is still at large. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Sergeant Scott Black at 762-400-7058 or via email at scott.black@accgov.com.
