15 arrested at vehicle checkpoints in Athens-Clarke County

The Clarke County Jail saw on influx of offenders on Friday after two roadway checkpoints resulted in multiple arrests.

The Athens-Clarke County Police says it conducted the two vehicle checkpoints to ensure safe driving. The checkpoints were advertised on social media—but this didn’t prevent several violations from occurring.

Police officers on Winterville Road checked over 400 cars, resulting in 38 citations and 12 arrests. Three of the arrests were DUIs, two of which were drug-related. Four of the arrests were individuals driving with suspended licenses, and one arrest was made for the possession of stolen property—a firearm.

On Newton Bridge Road, 20 citations were handed out. In addition, three arrests were made at this location, including one drug-related DUI.
