A Nevada man has been arrested in connection with a multi-state fraud ring. According to a release, on June 7th, Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a business on Lexington Road where they contacted 60-year old Anthony Phillips. Police say he attempted to make a large purchase using a fraudulently obtained account number.
Phillips gave police several false names before he was identified. He is suspected of being associated with the theft of several million dollars worth of merchandise around the country.
During this investigation, officers recovered $1,800 in stolen merchandise as well as some fentanyl from Phillips. He is charged with theft by receiving stolen property, giving false information to law enforcement and possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance. He has warrants from other jurisdictions related to the fraud ring.
