UGA Professor Dr. Marshall Shepherd advises Athenians to be wary of heat-related illnesses

With triple-digit heat index readings predicted in the next few days, meteorologist and University of Georgia Professor Dr. Marshall Shepherd, advises Athenians to take the heat seriously. WUGA’s Mary Ryan Howarth has more:

“Heat is the deadliest weather event every year.” (3:47- 3:49)

The United States Government suggests that during extreme heat, people should try to stay in air-conditioned spaces, drink lots of water and fluids, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

If you are planning to be outside, it’s best to avoid high-energy activities at midday, when the sun and heat exposure are at their strongest. Make sure to wear wide-brimmed hats, and SPF as well.

In a PSA from FEMA and the US Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Rachel Levine Assistant Secretary of Health, advises checking in on loved ones, especially older adults and children, during heat waves- and knowing what to do if someone is not ok.

“It is important to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses- such as mental confusion, or hot dry skin.” (0:45-0:49)

If you or someone around you is experiencing symptoms, get into a cooler space and drink fluids, and if symptoms persist, call your healthcare provider.
