More companies are finding it difficult to hire skilled employees, pressuring employers to rethink their hiring strategies.

The Athens unemployment rate is rising, which the state’s top labor official attributes to a rise in seasonal and student workers during the summertime. WUGA’s Mary Ryan Howarth has more:

In a media release, Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson says that while student and seasonal employees are important to the economy, those workers are still taking a toll on the unemployment rate for locals.

The unemployment rate in Athens in June reached 4.2 percent, compared to 3.6 percent in June 2023. Overall unemployment claims increased as well compared to last year. Claims increased by 164, totaling 373.
