Recall Rundown: Judge Says Attempt to Remove Mayor Girtz Can Move Forward

Athens-Clarke County Government

Local reporter Jim Thompson discussed the ongoing recall effort against Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Gertz. This effort, initiated by conservative activist James DePaola, was triggered by the death of Laken Riley and subsequent dissatisfaction with the mayor's handling of safety concerns.

Despite attempts to halt the recall due to alleged missed deadlines by the county's elections board, the Superior Court allowed DePaola to proceed with the recall. DePaola must now collect new signatures for the petition, which will eventually be reviewed again by the elections board. The case continues to unfold, with further developments anticipated.
