Commissioners will vote Tuesday on a proposed new housing development on Athens’ west side.
On Tuesday, commissioners are set to decide whether a 40-acre group of land parcels will be transformed into a housing development. The parcels are located at the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Cleveland Road, across from the Caterpillar Plant.
Public opposition to the project has waxed and waned over the past several months as it has wound its way through local government. At a Planning Commission meeting in late June, Cleveland Road-area residents turned out to oppose the development over traffic and safety concerns. The Planning Commission, however, voted overwhelmingly to pass the proposal along to the Mayor and Commission.
No west-side residents turned out to oppose the project at a Commission meeting in mid-July. Commissioners in turn seemed supportive of the development, saying it could help reduce Athens’ housing deficit.
