Athens-Clarke Police Arrest Hit and Run/Murder Suspect

The Athens-Clarke Police have made an arrest in a hit and run/murder. Police were called to the scene shortly after 6 o’ clock on Sunday regarding a woman who was struck by a vehicle while she waited at a bus stop. The vehicle then left the scene.

The victim, 45-year-old Shelby Cox of Athens, was taken to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The suspect, 58-year-old Jeffery Scott Tate, also of Athens, was taken into custody with the assistance of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested and charged with murder, hit and run (resulting in serious injury/death), reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane.
