The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer involved shooting in Athens. According to a release from the GBI, 26-year-old Marquavious Sims died during the incident. No officers were injured. Authorities say on Sunday, August 11, at about 1:20 am, a person called 911about a man having a machine gun out and was waving it around.
Athens-Clarke County Police officers responded and saw Sims with the weapon at a store near the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road. Sims ran across the road and into a gas station parking lot. Officers chased Sims and repeatedly shouted for him to drop the gun. At one point Sims turned and fired the gun at the officers. Two officers returned fire, hitting Sims multiple times. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Sims’ body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, Georgia for an autopsy.
Once the GBI investigation is complete, it will be given to the Clarke County District Attorney’s Office for review.
