Clarke County School District plans for Thursday/Friday

Updated Sept. 25, 7:21pm

In a message Wednesday evening by CCSD's Director of Communication, Scott Thompson, the following was shared with families:

As of now (6:30 p.m. Wednesday), CCSD will run on a normal school schedule on Thursday Sept. 26, with the exception of after-school activities, all of which have been canceled.

However, based on updated weather briefings we have received from GEMA, we have decided to cancel school on Friday, Sept. 27. This cancellation includes all after-school activities. Should circumstances change regarding school plans on Thursday, we will provide updates as quickly as possible on our website and Facebook page and via our mass email and text messaging system to families.

The Clarke County School District is announcing plans for Thursday and Friday in advance of Hurricane Helene’s arrival. As of Wednesday afternoon, the district planned to operate on a regular schedule Thursday. However, all after-school activities have been canceled for Thursday. CCSD will announce by 1:30 pm Thursday, plans for school on Friday based on updates from GEMA and the National Weather Service.

Message from Clarke County School District regarding Hurricane Helene:

CCSD families,

As we prepare for the approaching severe weather forecasted for our area, we continue to work in coordination with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and local authorities in monitoring the storm and disruptions it may cause to our daily school operations.

The most recent forecast we have received from the National Weather Service and GEMA calls for heavy rain and possible severe storms starting tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 25) through Friday morning, Sept. 27, with high winds and potential tropical storm conditions beginning Thursday night (Sept. 26).

With this in mind, as of now (3:15 p.m. Wednesday), CCSD will operate on a regular schedule tomorrow (Thursday). However, all after-school activities — including after-school programs, sporting events/practices, etc. — have been canceled for Thursday. CCSD will announce, by 1:30 p.m. Thursday, plans for school on Friday based on the midday update we receive from GEMA and the National Weather Service.

Please understand that these plans are fluid, and we will provide regular updates as necessary should we need to change course. We will post updates to both our website (www.clarke.k12.ga.us) and our official Facebook page (facebook.com/ClarkeCoSchools) and communicate with families via our mass email and text message system.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
