Days after Hurricane Helene tore through Georgia, residents are still recovering from the damage. Governor Brian Kemp joined federal, state and local leaders in Richmond County and the surrounding area for a tour of the damage. The governor also provided an update on the state’s response.
“Just know that we will work in a bipartisan way on disaster relief in this state, with our federal, state, and local partners” Kemp said. “We have submitted our expedited emergency declaration, this is seething that’s very rare, but this will help us. I feel certain it’ll be approved by the President and federal partners. This will help us get money flowing quicker to our state.”
Hundreds of thousands of residents were still without power Monday. There are still more than 500 damaged traffic signals in the state. The governor cautioned drivers to treat them as a four-way stop.
GEMA Director Chris Stallings discussed available resources.
“Currently, we 361 drinking water sites that are serving over a million customers,” according to Stallings. “We currently have about 520 people in shelters across the state.
