An avian influenza outbreak lead UGA and FDA to begin testing U.S. dairy products and supplies.

The University of Georgia’s Center for Influenza Disease and Emergence Research is one of 5 institutions partnering with the FDA after the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1) outbreak.

The H5N1 influenza strain was found in U.S. dairy cattle for the first time this year. While pasteurization appears to kill the virus in milk, consumption of raw products is still at risk of spreading infection.
