Art & Research Meet in UGA's 4'33" Competition

The University of Georgia’s Spotlight on the Arts festival gets underway in the month of November. One of the events is the 4’33" contest, or 4 minutes, 33 seconds. It highlights research by UGA students.

Professor Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor is one of the organizers.

“This is an idea to embrace the fact that there are often inquiry and research driven art making happening and there’s of course, artful research happening,” Cahnmann-Taylor said. “So, this is a competition that asks students at all levels, undergraduate to graduate students, to contribute their ideas if they are working in that in-between space where the arts and research meet.”

The contest is open to any student conducting research related to the literary, visual, or performing arts. Students are asked to submit their proposals by October 29.

“They have to write as 300-to-500-word statement about their project and how it addresses both the arts as well as research inquiry practices. We expect that a lot of people in dance and performance studies and literature to participate, but we also hope that students in chemistry or biology, or other fields will participate. They can also submit up to three images.”

The 4’33" competition’s public event will take place on November 21st at the Athenaeum between 4 and 6 pm. Visit arts.uga.edu, for more information.
