Northeast Georgia voters made their voices heard in federal, state and local elections on Tuesday.
The Georgia Secretary of State’s office reported 74 percent of Athens-Clarke County’s roughly 72,000 registered voters cast ballots in this year’s election.
In local state legislative races, incumbents ruled the day. Northeast Georgia voters returned all their incumbent state legislators to the Georgia General Assembly for January 2025.
In Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties, voters selected a new District Attorney for the Western Judicial Circuit, independent candidate Kalki Yalamanchili.
All election results are unofficial until vote counts have been certified.
Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney
Voters in Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties selected former assistant district attorney Kalki Yalamanchili to be the Western Judicial Circuit’s next District Attorney. Yalamanchili defeated incumbent Deborah Gonzalez by a 20 percent margin capturing 60 percent of the vote to Gonzalez’s 40 percent.
US House of Representatives District 10
The Associated Press has named Republican incumbent Mike Collins the winner over challenger Alexandra “Lexy” Doherty in the US House district that includes 20 counties in Northeast Georgia.
Georgia Senate 46
Republican incumbent Bill Cowsert appears to have beat Democratic challenger Gareth Fenley in 46th State Senate district. At the time of this writing, Republican incumbent Bill Cowsert held a sizable lead over Democratic challenger Gareth Fenley in 46th State Senate district which includes Barrow, Clarke, Gwinnett, Oconee and Walton counties.
Georgia Senate 47
Republican incumbent Frank Ginn bested Democratic challenger Conolus Scott in the 47th State Senate district which includes Barrow, Clarke, Jackson and Madison counties. Ginn earned 63 percent of the vote to Scott’s 37 percent.
Georgia House of Representatives 120
Republican incumbent Houston Gaines will return to the Georgia House of Representatives. Gaines defeated Democratic challenger Andrew Ferguson in the 120th State House district which includes Barrow, Clarke, Jackson and Oconee counties. Gaines earned 61 percent of the vote to Ferguson’s 39 percent.
Georgia House of Representatives 121
Republican incumbent Marcus Wiedower retained his seat in the Georgia House of Representatives. Wiedower defeated Democratic challenger Eric Martin Gisler in the 121st State House district which includes Clarke and Oconee counties. Wiedower earned 61 percent of the vote to Gisler’s 39 percent.
Georgia House of Representatives 122
Democratic incumbent Spencer Frye ran unopposed in the 122nd District race for the Georgia House of Representatives. The 122nd District includes portions of north Athens-Clarke County.
Georgia House of Representatives 124
Republican incumbent Trey Rhodes beat Democratic challenger Melanie M. Miller in the 124th State House district which includes Clarke, Greene, Oglethorpe, Putnam and Taliaferro counties. Rhodes earned 66 percent of the vote to Miller’s 34 percent.
