Fine Arts Building showcasing the murals by renowned artist Jean Charlot.

With the bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to overlook two murals on the University of Georgia’s North Campus. One is inside Brooks Hall, while the other decorates the exterior of the Fine Arts Building. These murals were painted by Franco-Mexican muralist Jean Charlot in the 1940s. Dr. Nina S. Hellerstein is a Professor of French Emerita at the University of Georgia, and she researches Charlot’s work. WUGA’s Emma Auer sat down with her to take a deep dive into these fascinating murals, as well as Dr. Hellerstein’s forthcoming book about the artist’s other works.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
