There was nothing wrong with your radio.
If you were listening to the University of Georgia’s student-run radio station WUOG 90.5 FM on Thursday, you may have recognized a few familiar voices announcing the music.
WUGA staff members Lara Dua-Swartz, Havivah Saltz and Daniel McDonald joined WUGA intern and WUOG Local Music Director Joseph Mazzola in seizing WUOG’s airwaves in support of local non-profit musicians’ resource center Nuçi’s Space.
Seize the Airwaves is WUOG’s regular fundraiser that encourages community members to donate to a designated, local non-profit in exchange for an hourlong DJ shift on the venerable college rock radio station.
A homecoming of sorts, Dua-Swartz, Saltz and McDonald all got their start in college radio—Dua-Swartz at Syracuse University’s WERW, Saltz at Oberlin College’s WOBC and McDonald at WUOG.
Mazzola has reversed the trend, dividing their college experience between producing WUGA’s local classical music program Night Music and organizing WUOG’s support of the Athens music scene.
On Thursday, Mazzola took on the expert role, showing their “professional” colleagues how to play the music on Athens’ other radio favorite, WUOG 90.5 FM.
(WUGA’s your favorite, right? Right!)
At WUGA, we really love radio. So, it’s always a pleasure when we can join forces with the next generation of radio professionals to support a good cause.
