Athens-Clarke County workforce development initiative names leader

Athens Achieves!, a workforce development initiative led by the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, has named Dr. Alvie Coes III as its first Chief Workforce Officer.

Coes held the role of Academic Dean at Athens Technical College and currently serves as Vice President of Economic Development for Georgia Piedmont Technical College in Clarkston. He graduated from Georgia Southern University with degrees in business and workforce development as well as a doctorate in workforce education from the University of Georgia.

As CWO, Coes will be in charge of developing a board of advisors and implementing the 2024 Workforce Development Strategy. He will also be in charge of building an online job portal.

AthensAchieves! says that its goal is to create both skilled workers and high paying jobs in the Athens-area. It was awarded nearly $2 million of ARPA funds by the county government in June. Mayor Kelly Girtz broke a tie in favor of the plan.
