How CCSD plans to get more young readers on track

In 2022, only 32% of 4th grade students in Georgia were proficient readers. However, reading proficiency by this grade predicts educational outcomes later in life.

In December, the Clarke County School District released a video describing how it plans to help more students read at a proficient level by 4th grade.

Dr. Jennifer Scott, CCSD’s Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Student Support, sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss those plans in depth.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
