The Mayor and Commission regular session, to be held on February 4th, will likely hear several motions to rezone parts of Athens as well as a proposal for a new development project that could bring more multi-family homes and parking to the downtown Athens area.

The Commission will also consider putting $500,000 toward the Real-Time Crime Center. The money was donated by QuickTrip Corporation to the Athens-Clarke County Police Foundation.

The center, which was fast tracked after the murder of Laken Riley in February of last year, uses a network of surveillance cameras from apartments, businesses and body cameras to assist police in their work.

The Mayor and Commission are also being asked to acknowledge the continuous gaps inequitable resource distribution to Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in the city of Athens. The resolution cites that “Athens-Clarke County has a poverty rate of approximately 26.3%, which is significantly higher than the national average. This disparity is
disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.” The acknowledgment would recommit local government to building up underserved neighborhoods and to business and community outreach.
