The Cottage Sexual Assault Center and Children’s Advocacy Center is holding its annual fundraiser, the Vagina Monologues this week. Written by playwright V, formerly Eve Ensler, the play delves into themes of gender-based violence, identity, and healing. Linnea Ionno is Executive Director at the nonprofit.

“The play itself helps to share all of these stories and bring attention to issues we often don’t talk about regarding our experiences with our bodies and our vaginas,” Ionno said.

Proceeds will support the Cottage’s mission of supporting survivors of sexual violence and child abuse in the Athens area.

“The Cottage’s mission is to raise awareness and support the healing of individual families and communities affected by sexual violence and child abuse,” according to Ionno. “We provide 24/7, free confidential services to survivors.

Those services come in a variety of ways.

“We help work with them as they are navigating, if they want to report a sexual assault that they have experienced, if they are going through the investigative process with child abuse, we help provide support to the individuals, to their families, and extended loved ones. E provide medical advocacy, legal advocacy, we provide free counseling services, support groups.”

This year’s production is dedicated to Ange Kahn, a cast member who passed away last year.

Performances begin Thursday night at 8 at the Marigold Auditorium in Winterville. Additional performances on Friday and Saturday, also at 8 pm.
