At last week’s mayor and commission meeting, dozens of residents spoke in support of a resolution that would state the local government’s intent to address inequities faced by Black Athenians and people of color. Resolutions do not hold the force of an ordinance, but instead state an opinion of the commission.
By the end of the meeting, the commission tabled the resolution to a later date in the hope, some commissioners said, that it might turn into policy. Commissioner Stephanie Johnson of the 6th District was the only member to abstain from voting.
She sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss her decision to abstain, as well as some of her other priorities.
