At an agenda setting meeting Tuesday night, the Athens-Clarke County mayor and commission will consider endorsing a plan to support clean energy goals and lower energy costs for Georgians.

Georgia Power is a major supplier of electricity to the Athens-area. Every three years, it needs to file a plan with the statewide Public Service Commission outlining electricity needs for its service territory. This plan impacts clean energy usage as well as cost burden to customers.

Currently, Athens-Clarke County is a member of the Coalition of Local Governments, which has the authority to intervene during the adoption of this plan, including calling expert witnesses.

Tuesday evening, the Mayor and Commission will consider whether to endorse the Coalition’s goals, which it will promote during hearings for Georgia Power’s plan. These goals include increasing energy affordability, with a focus on low income Georgians.

Other cities involved in the coalition include Savannah, Fulton County, and Dekalb County.
