The University of Georgia School of Medicine has reached a major milestone, earning candidate status from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the accrediting body for medical education programs. Announced on Feb. 14, this designation marks significant progress toward full accreditation.
“I am proud of the tremendous progress we have made toward enrolling the first class of students,” said UGA President Jere W. Morehead, crediting Dean Shelley Nuss and her team for their efforts.
A site visit scheduled for fall 2025 will assess the school’s readiness, reviewing facilities, curriculum, and student support services. Once preliminary accreditation is granted, student recruitment can begin.
The school is projected to contribute up to $2.3 billion to Georgia’s economy by 2040. Construction on its new Medical Education and Research Building, a 93,600-square-foot facility, will begin in May and is expected to be completed by December 2026.
