Celebrated Kentucky poet to bring Horsepower to Athens Friday

Joy Priest is a celebrated poet from Kentucky. Her debut collection Horsepower won the Donald Hall Prize for Poetry, and in 2021 she received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. She will visit Athens on Friday for a reading and book signing event at 7 pm at 675 Pulaski Street. The event will be hosted by the Creative Writing Program at the University of Georgia in partnership with the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.

Daniel Barnum is a first-year student in the English: Creative Writing PhD program at the University of Georgia. Their writing has appeared in West Branch, The Iowa Review, and elsewhere. They sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Joy Priest. Here’s that conversation.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
