Governor Brian Kemp has made a historic pick for his choice to fill the state labor commission vacancy. Barbara Rivera Holmes will succeed former commissioner Bruce Thompson, who passed away last year. She is the first Latina to hold a statewide constitutional office in Georgia.

"Throughout my career, I’ve been committed to creating opportunities and building stronger communities by fostering partnerships and statewide alliances, driving job creation, and security capital investment,” Rivera Holmes said. “As Labor Commissioner, I pledge to continue this work, always putting Georgians first.”

Governor Kemp touted the public service record for the former journalist, former member of the Board of Regents and President and CEO of the Albany Chamber of Commerce.

“With her unique experience in both economic development, especially in rural Georgia, and education at the highest levels in our state, she brings an unmatched combination of knowledge and ability to this role that will that will benefit all those looking for work,” according to Kemp.

He also emphasized Georgia’s national standing when it comes to business and jobs.

“In this number one state for business, we’re blessed to have three jobs available for every person looking for one, and Georgia’s pipeline for opportunity is strong and still delivering news jobs and investment.”

Rivera Holmes will be the 11th Labor Commissioner for the state. She will need to run for a full four-year term in 2026.
