At Tuesday’s agenda setting meeting, the Mayor and Commission were supposed to discuss an ordinance that would remove the historic Saye building from the boundaries of the Western Downtown Historic District.

While the agenda item was moved to Executive Session to be discussed privately due to pending litigation, several community members came forward to object to the ordinance.

Scott Nesbit, a UGA professor from Bel Air Heights, pointed out the ordinance goes against the city’s comprehensive plan, “To go against that would leave this body, I would think, open to accusations that it's being arbitrary - capricious - to go against its long and settled plans.”

Former Mayor Gwen O’Looney also spoke out, “There are 19 Historic districts in this community. We care about Historic Preservation… Don’t let this be a mistake that you’ve made that cannot be removed.”

The Mayor and Commission will vote on this ordinance at their next Regular Session, April 1st.
