ACCA Hopes to Raise Awareness About Meals on Wheels

This month, the Athens Community Council on Aging is joining other agencies around the nation in celebrating the impact of the Meals on Wheels program. Eve Anthony is President and CEO of the ACCA. She says they are also hoping to raise awareness about the program and the increased for the services.

“We are joining our partner providers across the country for a campaign that’s call ‘End the Wait.’ The awareness that we are creating through all of our March for Meals activities, is to raise awareness that there is an extensive waiting list for older adults in Meals for Wheels.”

She says they are thousands on wait lists around the state and dozens here in Athens.

“Statewide there are 4,500 older adults who are on waiting lists in different counties across Georgia,” according to Anthony. “Locally, we have 40 older adults who are waiting for Meals on Wheels.”

Anthony says during March; they are offering members of the community a unique opportunity to help the organization.

“What our hope is that during this month, is to invite people through our community to ride along with one of our dedicated volunteers to learn more about Meals on Wheels, also the need the need that still exists and to share that with others.”

Each year the ACCA delivers over 68,000 meals.
