Athens has seen several protests organized by Democratic activists since President Trump’s inauguration.
The Saturday protest at Athens City Hall was larger than the last.
More than five hundred protesters quickly spilled out onto College Avenue.
Donna Dempsey drove in from nearby Lawrenceville. She says she’s concerned about the Trump administration’s impacts on retirees like her.
“I rely not only on social security that I paid into, but my 401k,” she said. “The past two days, I have lost everything I’ve gained the past three years.”
Local drumming group Palms of Fire pounded away on the steps of City Hall, where Barb Burt watched the growing crowd. She’s one of the co-leaders of Georgia Indivisible 10, which organized the protest.
“We wanted to show a force across the country to let folks in Washington know that people are not happy with what’s going on,” she said.
Protestors demanded answers from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, President Trump, and Representative Mike Collins.
A small number of counter protestors was also present.
