Main Street closures expected in downtown Watkinsville due to utility work

Workers with Athens-Clarke County install a traffic-calming device.

Expect some traffic delays in downtown Watkinsville. A utility pole on Main Street is being removed and replaced with two new poles. The original pole, placed in an awkward position 40 years ago, has long been less than ideal for pedestrians.

However, the work will affect downtown traffic, as a section of Main Street—from School Street to Harden Hill Road—will be closed at various times today and again next Friday. Georgia Power and other utilities agreed to schedule the work during spring break week for Oconee County Schools to help reduce traffic congestion.
